As electricity tariff is set to increase by over 40 per cent in the coming days, a foundation for people living with disabilities have called on the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu and the APC-led Federal government to come to immediate rescue of members and suffering masses.
The Coordinator and founder of the Kehinde Oshilaja Foundation, Comrade Kehinde Oshilaja, made the call on Thursday at the June edition of the monthly meeting of the association at their Lagos Headquarters, Ebute-Metta, Lagos, with the presence of over 500 members of the association in attendance.
Oshilaja maintained that it is high time the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu assist the people living with disabilities and indeed over 22million residents of the state to prevail and further extend the appeal to the Federal Government to provide all other avenues that would mitigate the effect on people if eventually implemented as stated.
According to him "Let our kind-hearted governor of the aquatic splendour avail the masses, particularly, people living with disabilities with some measures that would cushion the effect on us. Also, let me use this opportunity to inform our loving governor that the said issue if actually implemented, would no doubt affect majority of the people living with disabilities and indeed the poor masses of Nigeria.
Continuing, in the same vein, it is imperative to let our governor know that only 1 percent of the people living with disability are working, while 99 percent will be in dilemma because there won't be anyone to help. We therefore on this note plead for your speedy and unhindered assistance in intimating the APC -led Federal government to put measures in place that would ameliorate the situation or else", Oshilaja said
Oshilaja further posited that there is no doubt that the increase in the tariff will affect and increase the suffering of the people living with disabilities and indeed the entire masses, adding that when the tariff has not been in increased, a member of the foundation who was said to be living in a- room apartment narrated that Ikeja Disco Company usually bring monthly bill of 85,000 naira to their 6-room apartment at Alago- Meji, Yaba, Lagos come to them, asking how much should they be expecting when such exorbitant tariff is now increased by July 1 as being speculated.
He concluded that the it is high time the Federal Government and the National Assembly use their veto powers and rescue the masses of Nigeria, particularly people living disability from the hands of Almighty NEPA or DISCOS by providing free prepaid meters in abundance to all and sundry within the next two months or less
